NIGHT OF WRATH

Synopsis

MARIAN is a surgical resident living in Austin, Texas with her psychiatrist-fiancé, TONY. The early stages of her pregnancy have brought a recurrence of the nightmares she suffered as child. As the dreams intensify and prevent her from sleeping, Marian also experiences hallucinatory moments while at work. She agrees to consult ROLAND BLACKMUN, a colleague of Tony's. Blackman questions Marian about her early life--her Father was killed in a car accident when she was four, her mother BRANDY COFFEY is a famous singer who retired from performing to care for her. When Marian's mother learns of the pregnancy and the return of her dreams, she is alarmed but can only suggest that Marian leave town until the baby is born. Marian refuses; but when she returns home, two masked men are waiting. Tony is already dead. Shot four times in the back, Marian loses her child but survives.

Two years later, Marian has moved to Los Angeles and now works in a small clinic. She treats a young girl, SUSANNAH, who cut her arm on a broken bottle in a playground. That night, Marian's dreams return, and Susannah is part of them. The following afternoon on the street outside the clinic, Marian encounters AQUINAS, a self-professed "psychic bum." He calls Marian a witch but refuses to elaborate on this. When Marian's mother telephones that evening, she mentions her encounter and the return of the dreams. Marian's mother offers no advice other than a warning not to consult Dr. Blackmun. The next day, Marian offers Aquinas a hundred dollars to "read" her. Aquinas sees something so frightening that he refuses the money and runs off. That afternoon GAYLON WINTERS comes to the clinic to meet Marian. He has been sent by Aquinas to help. Marian does not feel she needs assistance from a psychic bum or his cronies; but she agrees to meet Winters later. The rendezvous is at a Goth club called Carfax Abbey in an industrial section of downtown. After Marian expresses distaste for the milieu, they go across the street to Winters' office, where the pebbled glass door reads simply: "Gaylon Winters, Ph.D. Investigations." Winters proceeds to "investigate" Marian. He overpowers her, examines her for marks, and tests her reaction to a foul-smelling concoction. When she passes this test, Winters apologizes and tells her she is free to go. Dissatisfied with this, Marian insists on knowing what exactly he investigates. His answer astounds her: Vampires. Winters tells a cynical and mocking Marian that Aquinas had taken her for a vampire; but he was wrong. Marian is just the human progeny of a vampire. Marian listens to Winters in complete disbelief, but the paranormalist has deduced a lot about her. The Winters goes on-line and consults a data-base which indicates that Marian's father didn't did in an car accident but was torn apart by feral dogs.

The following evening Marian returns to see Gaylon only to discover that he has been attacked and mortally wounded. At his insistence, she leaves him to retrieve the notebook computer which holds all his data from his office. In a panic, Marian does call Dr. Blackmun for advice but cannot reach him. In the meantime, Marian explores the on-line sub-culture of vampirism. While there, she makes a cyber connection with a woman claiming to be Gaylon's aunt, GRANNY VI. Marian visits this older woman and then, empowered by the information she has gathered, takes action: She drinks blood. This, as Gaylon has told her, was what the vampire cult feared, because it gives her preternatural powers far superior to theirs.

Marian puts in motion the Night of Wrath. Using on-line clues, she tracks down and slaughters a score of vampires. By the time Blackmun returns her call, Marion cannot turn back. At week's end, the vampire body count nears 100 and among the victims is Gaylon's "aunt," who was actually a vampire...and Roland Blackmun's mother. Blackmun finds her head in a microwave. He goes to the clinic, where he is surprised to discover Marian and Aquinas waiting. At gunpoint, Blackmun takes them back to Marian's apartment to retrieve Gaylon's computer. When that is done, he plans to kill Marian, who until she drank blood had been protected by her vampire mother. Marian and Aquinas have lured Blackmun into a trap and ensnare him. Not satisfied with breaking his bones, Marian exacts grisly revenge on the man responsible for the deaths of her fiancé and Winters and hundreds more. A transfusion of inimical blood causes Blackmun to die in searing agony. At dawn, Marian and Aquinas burn Blackmun's remains on a local beach where Marian professes that she has no plans to abandon her vendetta.
